Roulette payouts and odds: what every bet pays and the house edge
What does roulette pay? Every inside and outside bet has a fixed payout, from 35 to 1 on a single number down to 1 to 1 on red or black. The payouts are the same on almost every wheel; what changes is how many pockets the wheel has, and that sets the house edge. This guide lists every bet with its payout, true odds and edge on single zero and double zero wheels, explains rules like la partage that lower the edge, and shows how to check a provably fair roulette spin yourself.
Roulette payout chart
On a European wheel there are 37 pockets, numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero. The table shows each bet, how many numbers it covers, what it pays and how often it wins.
| Bet | Numbers covered | Payout | Win chance, single zero | Win chance, double zero |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35 to 1 | 2.70% | 2.63% |
| Split | 2 | 17 to 1 | 5.41% | 5.26% |
| Street | 3 | 11 to 1 | 8.11% | 7.89% |
| Corner | 4 | 8 to 1 | 10.81% | 10.53% |
| Six line | 6 | 5 to 1 | 16.22% | 15.79% |
| Dozen or column | 12 | 2 to 1 | 32.43% | 31.58% |
| Red/black, odd/even, 1 to 18 / 19 to 36 | 18 | 1 to 1 | 48.65% | 47.37% |
"35 to 1" means you get 35 units of profit plus your stake back, 36 units in total. Payouts quoted as "36x" on some crypto casinos mean the same thing counted with the stake included.
The bet coverage follows the Evolution Euro Roulette rules as published by theScore Bet. Zero is not covered by column bets or by any of the even-money bets.
Why the payout is less than the true odds
A fair payout on a single number at a 37-pocket wheel would be 36 to 1: one win in 37 spins would exactly repay the 36 losing stakes. The casino pays 35 to 1. The missing unit is the edge.
The neat result is that every standard bet on the same wheel has the same edge, because each payout is set as if zero did not exist:
- Single zero: you get back 36 units for every 37 staked on average. House edge = 1/37 = 2.70%, RTP 97.30%.
- Double zero: you get back 36 units for every 38. Edge = 2/38 = 5.26%, RTP 94.74%.
theScore Bet's rules page for Evolution's Euro Roulette lists the RTP as 97.30%, which matches the maths.
There is one exception. On a double zero wheel, the five-number bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3 pays 6 to 1. It wins 5 times in 38, so it returns 35/38 per unit and carries a 7.89% edge, the worst bet on the table.
La partage and en prison
French roulette adds a rule for even-money bets. As theScore Bet's page puts it for French Roulette, "if you make an even-money bet and the ball lands on zero, you lose only half your bet."
That halves the cost of zero on those bets:
| Bet type | Edge without la partage | Edge with la partage |
|---|---|---|
| Even-money bets | 2.70% | 1.35% |
| All other bets | 2.70% | 2.70% |
En prison is a similar rule: your even-money stake is held for the next spin instead of being halved. Where it applies, the edge on even-money bets is about the same. Check the game's rule page; most online European tables do not use either rule.
Payouts for common combination bets
Many players spread chips across several bets. The payout of each chip does not change, so you can work out the result by hand. A common example on a single zero wheel:
- $10 on red and $10 on the third column.
- Ball lands on 36 (red, third column): red pays $10, column pays $20, total profit $30.
- Ball lands on 33 (black, third column): red loses $10, column pays $20, profit $10.
- Ball lands on 0: both bets lose, $20 gone.
No combination of bets changes the overall edge. Twenty dollars spread across any standard bets costs 2.70% of $20, or 54 cents, on average per spin on a single zero wheel.
Provably fair roulette
Crypto casinos with their own roulette, such as Stake, Shuffle and Thrill, let you check each spin. The casino commits to a hashed server seed before you bet, you set a client seed, and each bet uses a new nonce. On Stake and Shuffle style games the spin is one random float multiplied by 37 and rounded down, giving a pocket from 0 to 36. Thrill draws an integer from 0 to 36 with its own SHA-512 method.
Worked example with made-up seeds
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Server seed (revealed after rotation) | 4c1e7a92d0b35f68e2a9c41d7b06f3e85c2d9a17b4e60f8a3d5c27e1b94a06f3 |
| Hashed server seed (shown before play) | 50fd12f9833c85a8479096fc4daf96820cc1cbad8fdd99fa2b7a6ac5de17c170 |
| Client seed | maple-ridge-42 |
| Nonce | 0 |
- SHA-256 of the server seed matches the hash, so the seed was fixed before the spin.
- HMAC-SHA256 of
maple-ridge-42:0:0keyed with the server seed startsf4420ed7, bytes 244, 66, 14 and 215. - 244/256 + 66/256^2 + 14/256^3 + 215/256^4 = 0.954133.
- 0.954133 x 37 = 35.30, rounded down: the ball lands on 35.
Nonces 1, 2 and 3 on the same seeds land on 20, 33 and 14. You can open this check in our verifier, and our guide on how to verify a provably fair bet walks through doing the same with your own seeds.
Provably fair proves the spin was not changed after you bet. It does not change the payout table, so the 2.70% edge still applies. Read our Stake Originals explained page for how the same scheme drives the other house games.
Live and RNG roulette
Live dealer roulette spins a physical wheel on camera. Evolution's rules, as published by theScore Bet, cover what happens when something goes wrong: an invalid spin is re-spun, and if a game error cannot be fixed the round is cancelled and "initial bets will be refunded to all players." If you disconnect, your bets stay valid and are settled in your absence.
RNG roulette from software studios uses a certified random number generator instead of seeds you can check. The payouts are the same; the difference is how you can confirm a result, which our page on which casino games are provably fair compares game by game.

Key terms
- House edge
- The average percentage of every wager that a game is built to keep for the casino.
- Return to player (RTP)
- The share of all money staked that a game is designed to return to players across a very large number of rounds.
- Provably fair
- A cryptographic method that lets you confirm a game result was set before your bet and left untouched afterwards.
- Server seed
- The casino's secret random value that, together with your client seed and the nonce, decides each bet result.
- Client seed
- The player's own input to every provably fair result, set or edited by you so the casino cannot work out outcomes in advance.
- Nonce
- A bet counter that goes up by one for each wager on the same seed pair, so no two bets share a result.
- Hashed server seed
- The SHA-256 digest of the casino's secret server seed, published before any bet as proof the seed is locked in.
- Random float
- A number between 0 and 1 derived from a provably fair hash, which a game formula turns into a result.
- HMAC
- A hash function that takes a secret key; provably fair games run HMAC-SHA256 over the server seed, client seed and nonce.
- SHA-256
- A cryptographic hash that maps any input to a fixed 256-bit digest; casinos use it to commit to server seeds.
- Seed rotation
- Swapping the active server seed for a fresh one, which discloses the old seed so you can verify its bets.
- Live dealer games
- Table games broadcast from a studio with a real dealer, where physical cards, wheels or dice decide the outcome.
- Random number generator (RNG)
- The software behind third-party slot and table results, trusted through lab certification instead of player-checkable seeds.
