Stake mines calculator: odds and multipliers

Set the number of mines and how many tiles you plan to reveal. The calculator shows your exact chance of clearing every pick and the multiplier you should be paid.

Mines is played on a 5 by 5 grid of 25 tiles. Before the round starts the game hides between 1 and 24 mines under the tiles. Each safe tile you reveal raises the multiplier, and one mine ends the round with nothing paid.

The odds are pure counting, so they are the same at Stake and at every casino that copies its version of the game. Past rounds do not change them, and no predictor can know where the mines are: the positions come from seeds that are locked in before you click.

How to use it

  1. Enter the number of mines, from 1 to 24.
  2. Enter how many tiles you plan to reveal before you cash out. The most you can pick is 25 minus the number of mines.
  3. Leave the house edge at 1% for Stake, or change it to the edge your casino lists for Mines.
  4. Read your chance of clearing every pick and the multiplier after the edge. The table below shows the same numbers after each tile, so you can see what each extra click is worth.

How it works

The chance that k picks are all safe with m mines is C(25 - m, k) / C(25, k), where C(n, k) is the number of ways to choose k tiles out of n. The fair multiplier is 1 divided by that chance, and the casino pays the fair multiplier times (1 - house edge).

Example: with 3 mines and 5 picks, C(22, 5) is 26,334 and C(25, 5) is 53,130, so the chance is 49.57%. The fair multiplier is 2.0175x, and with a 1% edge the game pays 0.99 / 0.4957 = 1.9974x.

The house edge is the same at every step, so cashing out earlier or later does not change how much you lose on average per unit bet. It only changes how often you win and by how much.

Frequently asked questions

What are the odds of hitting a mine on the first click?
It is the number of mines divided by 25. With 3 mines that is 12%, so the first tile is safe 88% of the time.
What is the best number of mines to play?
No setting is better in the long run. The multiplier is set so the house edge is the same for every number of mines and picks, 1% at Stake. More mines only mean bigger multipliers and fewer wins.
Can a Mines predictor tell me where the mines are?
No. The mine positions come from the server seed, your client seed and the nonce, and the server seed stays hidden until you rotate it. You can check any finished round with our verifier.
Why is the paid multiplier lower than the fair multiplier?
The fair multiplier would leave the casino no edge. The casino keeps its share by multiplying it by 1 minus the house edge, which is 0.99 at a 1% edge.
