Esports map handicap
An esports handicap on maps in a series: -1.5 maps needs a clean sweep in a best-of-three, while +1.5 needs only one map win.
Most competitive esports series in CS2, Valorant, League of Legends and Dota 2 are played over several maps (or games). A map handicap adjusts the series score. In a best-of-three (Bo3):
- -1.5 maps wins only on a 2-0 result.
- +1.5 maps wins on 2-0, 2-1 or 1-2: any result where that team takes at least one map.
In a best-of-five, -1.5 requires 3-0 or 3-1, and -2.5 requires 3-0.
Worked example
Illustrative Bo3 prices: Team A to win the series at 1.45; Team A -1.5 maps at 2.30; Team B +1.5 maps at 1.60.
- Series price implied: 1/1.45 = 69.0%.
- 2-0 implied: 1/2.30 = 43.5%.
- So the market rates Team A winning 2-1 at roughly 69.0 minus 43.5 = 25.5 points (before removing margin).
$40 on Team A -1.5 returns $92 on a 2-0. $40 on Team B +1.5 returns $64 if Team B takes any map.
Modelling from map probabilities
If you estimate Team A wins any single map 65% of the time, and maps are treated as independent, P(2-0) = 0.65² = 42.25% and P(Team B wins at least one map) = 57.75%. Fair odds would be 2.37 and 1.73. Real series are not fully independent: map picks and bans change the odds map by map.
Rules
Check how forfeits and technical remakes are settled (see void bet), and do not confuse map handicaps with round handicaps, which apply to rounds within a single map.
