Cash out

An early settlement offer on an open bet, calculated from the current price of the selection minus a margin for the bookmaker.

Cash out lets you close a bet before it settles. The bookmaker values your open position at the current market price and offers that value less a deduction. Accepting ends the bet; the eventual result no longer matters.

The formula

Approximate fair cash-out value = stake × original odds / current odds.

Illustrative: €100 on a soccer team at 2.50. They lead 1-0 at half-time and their price is now 1.25.

  • Fair value: 100 × 2.50 / 1.25 = €200.
  • Offer: €190.
  • Implied deduction: 10 / 200 = 5% of the position's value.

Is the offer reasonable?

The current price itself contains margin, so the true fair value is slightly above €200 and the real cost of cashing out is more than the visible 5%. Think of a cash out as a new bet on the opposite side: the live odds already include the book's cut, and the deduction is applied on top.

When it can still make sense

Risk management: if a bet has grown into a large share of your bankroll, reducing variance can be worth a small expected cost. Partial cash out, where available, lets you settle part of the position and let the rest ride. What it cannot do is turn a bet without an edge into one with an edge.

Availability

Cash out is discretionary. Bookmakers can suspend or withdraw it at any time, and it is rarely offered on every market. It is common on parlays and futures.
