Destination tag

An extra number on some crypto payments, XRP for instance, that tells a shared address which account to credit.

On certain chains, the XRP Ledger among them, a payment can carry a destination tag or memo. Casinos and exchanges frequently pool many customers behind one address and use that tag to route each deposit to the right account. Other networks offer a comparable memo field.

What goes wrong without it

Leave the tag off and the coins reach the casino's address but never your balance. Getting them back means support has to step in by hand, and some platforms charge for that or refuse outright.

Scenario

The cashier displays an XRP address together with destination tag 4815162. You send the XRP to the address and forget the tag. The ledger confirms the payment, but your casino balance stays where it was. You open a ticket with the transaction hash, and staff then have to trace and credit the funds manually.

Avoiding the mistake

  • Copy address and tag as two separate items and double-check each one.
  • For withdrawals to an exchange, enter the tag that exchange assigns to you.
  • For withdrawals to a self-custody wallet, a tag is normally not needed.
