Moneyline
An outright winner bet; in two-way sports like tennis it is the match price, while soccer adds the draw as a third outcome.
"Moneyline" is the North American name for a straight bet on the winner. Elsewhere it is usually called match odds or the win market. In two-outcome sports such as tennis, MMA or most esports, the moneyline is exactly that. In soccer, a regular-time bet on the winner has three results (home, draw, away), so the standard market is the 1X2 rather than a two-way line. Many books also offer draw no bet, which refunds the stake if the match is drawn.
The numbers
Tennis, illustrative: Player A 1.65, Player B 2.30.
- Implied probability: 1/1.65 = 60.61% and 1/2.30 = 43.48%, total 104.08%.
- Margin-free estimate: 60.61/104.08 = 58.2% and 41.8%.
- Fair odds from those: about 1.72 and 2.39.
A $100 stake on Player B returns $230, profit $130. In American odds the pair is roughly -154 and +130.
Reading it critically
The gap between offered and fair price is the book's cut on your side of the market, and it is not always split evenly between favourite and underdog. Compare the implied probability of your side across several books before committing, and check whether a tennis retirement voids the bet or settles it (see void bet).
