Anjouan licence

An online gaming licence from Anjouan, one of the autonomous Comoros islands, widely held by crypto casinos and often criticised.

Anjouan, an autonomous island within the Union of the Comoros, runs a gaming regulator that grants online gambling licences. Crypto casinos have taken these licences in large numbers over the last few years, usually pointing to fast approval and low cost.

Reading the licence correctly

  • According to the Anjouan regulator, no licensing body can exempt an operator from local law where a market demands local authorisation. So an Anjouan licence does not make a casino legal in places such as Ontario, Alberta or the UK.
  • The public register is long, and trade press has criticised some licensees for taking players from markets where they hold no local licence.
  • For its part, the regulator cites its own due diligence, AML, KYC and responsible gaming rules.

Weight in our audits

For us, an Anjouan licence only shows that a company exists and has a regulator of record. It is not proof of strong player protection. What really drives our score is how a casino performs in our own payout tests, how it treats complaints, and whether its fairness claims survive verification.
