A bet cancelled under the bookmaker's rules and settled at odds of 1.00, so the stake is refunded and nothing else is paid.

A void bet is treated as if it had never happened: odds of 1.00, stake returned. Triggers are defined in each bookmaker's terms and vary more than most bettors realise.

Common triggers

  • Event postponed or abandoned beyond the window set in the rules.
  • Player or team withdrawals for markets that require participation.
  • Palpable (obvious) errors in pricing.
  • Tennis retirements, where rules differ sharply: some books void bets unless the match is completed, others settle once a set has been completed, others settle on the player who advances.

Example: tennis retirement

€50 on Player A at 1.75. Player B retires midway through the second set with Player A leading.

  • Under a "match must be completed" rule: void, €50 returned.
  • Under a "one set completed" rule: Player A is the winner and the bet pays €87.50.
  • Under an "advancing player" rule: same as above, €87.50.

Same match, different settlements, depending on where you bet.

In a parlay

Void legs are usually removed and the rest settled. Three legs at 1.60, 2.00 and 1.85 have combined odds of 5.92. Void the second and the parlay becomes 1.60 × 1.85 = 2.96.

Esports

Esports books often void map or match bets if a technical issue forces a remake or a forfeit, but the conditions are book-specific (see map handicap). Check before betting on events with a history of server problems.
